This weekend, Game Club hosted a Limited Prerelease-style Magic: The Gathering event for all student grades 6-12. A few very generous local players donated roughly 3400 cards to us in the past few months and my teacher's aide (thanks, Morgan Sandidge!) organized them all by set and rarity into mock "booster packs." A few weeks ago, the HS Game Club helped out at a "How to Play MTG" event at the Middle School's Makerspace, and it all came together yesterday.
23 middle and high school students piled in for an afternoon of limited play, where they got to build decks, smash face with mythical monsters, and win prizes... all completely free. Experienced (and thoroughly addicted) seniors battled enthusiastic 6th-grade rookies in four rounds of Swiss-style tournament play. Kudos go to our tied champions, sophomore Adria Lapka and 6th-grader Jagur Parks, who both went 8-2. Best part? Jagur was undefeated in 4 rounds (2 against seniors!) and he's only been playing for a few weeks! I fear this little beast getting to the high school.
Finally, a big thanks to Aaron Bauerly and Justin Cox, local MTG gurus, for helping out as judge/master-sensei. Congrats to all participants and I hope you enjoy the big boost to your collections, especially our new players!
