Halfway through the semester, and the countdown has begun! Here's where things stand:
PreCalc is holding a solid pace, easily several weeks ahead of first semester's crew. Those who take the extra step in their learning (asking questions via Remind or outside of class) are doing very well. We are heading into the big kahuna unit (trig functions) and I feel the kids are up to the challenge.
Algebra is hanging in there. As is typical with this class, these kids are improving their problem solving skills and becoming far more confident in working together as a group, explaining their reasoning, and being willing to share their work in front of the class. Performance and grades, however, come down to the same old underclassman issues: attendance and homework. Gotta do it!
As spring activities and employment chip away at our numbers, Game Club has seen reduced attendance for our usual Thursday game nights, at maybe 8-12 students. Our Magic: The Gathering Lunch Leagues and Spartan Time crew, on the other hand, are packed! We see 12-20 kids every day for varying-format duels or multiplayer shenanigans. Congrats to the March League winners: Paul Carrivou, Christian Bradford, and Tristen Olsson!
As we head for the home stretch, students are reminded to keep grinding and not slack off. We have a 7-week marathon to the finish, and it's hard to stay focused. Seniors, in particular, have little time left. With Graduation on May 12th, our PreCalc seniors will have to do all of Ch 10 on their own and schedule their quizzes, chapter test, and finals!
And lastly, Game Club is slowly gaining more community exposure. We now have our own Facebook page (search for @SHSgames) so I can stop clogging up the current events here. We have also received a pile of goodies directly from Wizards of the Coast, makers of MTG, to help new players get started with free Welcome Decks and such, and wow, have there been a bunch of new recruits coming down to our room to join the fun!
Biggest and best of all, Game Club will be hosting our first open-to-the-community Magic: The Gathering prerelease event! We held a students-only event in January for the Rivans of Ixalan block, and it was such a success that we will have a big ol party for Dominaria! This is widely considered to be the biggest MTG set in years, since it falls on the 25th anniversary of the game and returns the storyline to the world where it all began. With several weeks to go, we already have over 20 signed up!
